The original zoo was built in 1933,acquired by Belfast City Council in 1962 and (thankfully) rebuilt in the late 1970s to provide the best possible conditions for captive animals. Improvements continue and the zoo is a successful part of various breeding programmes, for threatened species, some of which no longer survive in the wild. Some residents, lemurs and prairie dogs, have the run of the grounds, not least because they are great escapers. www: http://www.belfastcity.gov.uk/belfastzoo/

Morocco is an education in sight, sound, taste and smell and Dave Waterman is an intriguing guide. If asked he will offer photographic advice, so beginners can enjoy their trip. Travel light, by 4x4, on narrow, un-surfaced roads through amazing scenery, stay in local riads (guesthouses), find good food in restaurants and roadside stalls and see photo-opportunities everywhere www: http://www.moroccan-photo-safaris.com/
Northshots

The company that provides Norway with its coastal post and cargo service, offers relaxed voyages (not cruises!) in Norway, Spitsbergen, Greenland and Antarctica. The ships are comfortable and the food is good, the crew-members are charming and helpful. If you like country hotels and not much fuss, these trips are for you! www: http://www.hurtigruten.co.uk/
Auschwitz-Birkenau, Poland
An hour by train, from Krakow, is the town of Oswiecim and the remains of two of the three sites that made up the Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp. Auschwitz 1, created from a Polish Infantry Barracks, still survives, horribly as it was. Auschwitz 2-Birkenau is ruined, the result of Nazi attempts to destroy the evidence.
Experience this awful place, then after an unpleasant and emotionally draining few hours, leave by the (modern) gate marked ‘exit’, and try to imagine what it was like to have no way out. www: http://www.auschwitz.org.pl/html/eng/start/index.html
